End of the action "AMBER-UERRA" - products now available online
Results of the Europewide agrometeorological simulations are now accessible as maps and time series through a DWD web portal.
In the action "AMBER-UERRA" (DWD) meteorological reanalysis data by Copernicus has been used to enable Europewide simulations of agrometeorological variables. The results are now accessible as maps and time series through a web portal providing insights into the new dataset.
The web portal includes maps of Europe and regionally aggregated time series of soil moisture, actual evapotranspiration and water balance. Users can select between yearly, monthly and seasonal values. The products include data from 1981 to 2018, anomalies refer to the reference period of 1981 to 2010. The web portal is available in two languages (English and German). Every graphic is accompanied by a tabular summary which makes the information accessible to hearing. The colour schemes are accessible to common types of vision impairment.
The classical 1-D model AMBAV is developed at the Centre for Agrometeorological Research of DWD to determine the water and energy balance of various soils and crop types. Its predictions are routinely used in consulting services at DWD that were, however, restricted to the area of Germany. The model infrastructure was changed to be more flexible which allows for simulations on any desired spatial domain. The use of a Copernicus regional reanalysis as meteorological input to the model combined with gridded soil profiles and phenological data enabled the simulation and evaluation of dynamics of agrometeorological variables over climate relevant periods.
The main achievements are:
- Europewide crop-specific simulation of agrometeorological variables based on Copernicus reanalysis data
- Preparation of a comprehensive set of maps and time series visualizing the long term dynamics
