Starina Reservoir holds Slovakia’s largest supply of drinking water
Starina Reservoir, in eastern Slovakia, is the country’s largest source of drinking water. Located within Poloniny National Park, the reservoir is surrounded by primeval beech forests inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. These forests support biodiversity and water quality.
Acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 29 June 2026, the image shows the reservoir as a dark blue, branching body of water set within dense green forest. The wider landscape includes rural settlements such as Pčoliné, Jalová, and Topoľa, as well as fields, roads, and pale shorelines tracing the reservoir’s edge.
Copernicus satellite data provide reliable information for monitoring reservoir water extent, supporting water management and drought response planning.
