Earth Observation | Copernicus

The Cyprus University of Technology organizes “The Copernicus for Cultural Heritage Summer School Workshop” in Limassol (Cyprus) from 31st of October until 3rd of November 2023.

Cultural Heritage is greatly affected nowadays by climate change as it was discussed during that session. In other words, climate change is one of the main factors with a significant impact on changes of cultural heritage and landscapes. Some of the potential risks for cultural heritage and landscape include flooding, intense rainfall, extreme events in temperature change, coastal flooding and drought which can be extremely harmful when they affect a site over a long period of time. From the geo-science perspective, the topic of climate change and its potential risks is of crucial importance for environmental monitoring in general and it is one of the main applications of the European program on Earth Observation Copernicus.

Another important issue for Cultural Heritage is the looting of antiquities which is considered a major anthropogenic threat by the scientist and competent authorities. The most important issue stated here was the involvement of the different stakeholders which play a crucial role in preventing, protecting, conservating and eventually safeguarding Cultural Heritage sites.
