KCEO

Knowledge Centre on Earth Observation

Policymakers need actionable insights from the EU Space Earth Observation activities, yet the sheer volume of data delivered by Copernicus can sometimes be overwhelming.

The Knowledge Centre on Earth Observation (KCEO) helps EU policymakers leverage this growing wealth of knowledge to the fullest. It will assess the demands outlined in EU policies and translate them into technical requirements for Earth Observation products and services.

The KCEO will also help maximise the use of Copernicus data within the European Commission by co-developing these products and services alongside the different EU Directorate Generals (DGs) and technical partners. This partnership will:

  • Galvanise the uptake of Copernicus data within Europe’s scientific and policy circles and bring these circles together into an active community
  • Identify research needs and priorities that can guide the development of Copernicus products and services
  • Improve the regulation of Copernicus services and the space sector and increase the usefulness of data in public policy

The KCEO is jointly run by DG DEFIS and its partners at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC). Its community currently engages 17 Commission DGs around specific policy use cases and indicators.

The Knowledge Centre on Earth Observation maximizes Copernicus uptake for EU policies by establishing best practices, facilitating dialogue with implementing entities, and promoting next-generation EO science to enhance exploitation across the policy cycle.
