Autumn Colours in Chilean Patagonia

Cochrane is a small town in the Aysén Region of southern Chile, set within an Andean sector of Patagonia characterised by glacial valleys, snow-capped peaks, and temperate forests. The area is sparsely populated but ecologically significant, shaped by past and ongoing glaciation and hosting diverse temperate ecosystems.

This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 4 April 2026, reveals the onset of southern autumn across the Andean landscape. Deciduous vegetation appears in red and orange tones across forested slopes and valleys, reflecting the seasonal loss of foliage, while evergreen areas retain dark green colouring. Snow and ice cover the higher elevations, contrasting with areas of exposed rock. Turquoise and deep blue lakes and fjords, supplied by glacial meltwater, are visible across the terrain.

Copernicus Sentinel-2 data support the monitoring of seasonal vegetation dynamics and snow cover, informing environmental management and climate-related assessments in remote Andean regions.
