Fires are again affecting the Pantanal
In November 2023, as confirmed by the Brazilian Space Research Agency (INPE), the country faced a wildfire crisis with an alarming increase in the number of fires of nearly 3,000 being recorded compared to only 69 wildfires for the same period of the previous year. Among the worst affected areas was the Pantanal Matogressense National Park (PMNP), a bastion of rich biodiversity, in which blazes damaged about a third of the park's pristine landscape.
The burn scar in the PMNP is visible in red tones in this image acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 22 November.
Copernicus provides crucial data for fire prevention and preparedness, supporting the development of early warning systems and fire risk assessments.
