On 15 December 2024, the Pyrenees mountains were hit by an intense snowstorm.

In Spain, the Ebro Valley was affected by morning fog and widespread frost, especially in low-lying areas and depressions. Amid the snowfall, fog, and frost, authorities have advised drivers and residents to take precautions, as these conditions can impact visibility and safety. In France, authorities issued avalanche warnings for several departments in the western Pyrenees.

On 16 December, the cloudless skies allowed Copernicus Sentinel-3 to acquire a clear view of the snow cover on the Pyrenees.

Open data from the Copernicus Sentinel satellites helps to monitor snowfall and other environmental conditions in mountainous regions. This information supports authorities in making evidence-based decisions to help keep affected communities safer.
