Heavy floods in Cambodia
As of September 2024, nine provinces in Cambodia have been affected by severe flooding, which has damaged thousands of homes and led to the evacuation of hundreds of families. At least 9,000 hectares of rice paddies have been impacted by the flooding.
Authorities have issued warnings to residents living along the Mekong River, the waters of which have neared critical levels due to ongoing heavy rains expected to continue in the coming days.
Flooded areas along the Mekong River are shown in this image acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 26 September 2024. The areas around Krouch Chhmar and Chumnik, visible in the image, are heavily affected by the flooding.
Open data from the Copernicus Sentinel satellites help monitor the extent of flood areas, helping authorities allocate resources where they are most needed and better protect affected communities.
