On 9 October 2024, Hurricane Milton made landfall in Florida as a Category 3 storm, impacting a region still reeling from the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene just weeks earlier, which resulted in widespread destruction and hundreds of fatalities.
Milton unleashed tornadoes and winds exceeding 160 kilometres per hour, leaving more than two million homes without power. With heavy rains posing a significant flooding threat, authorities have urged residents to evacuate for their safety.

In this Copernicus Sentinel-3 image acquired on 9 October 2024, Hurricane Milton is visible making its way towards Florida’s western coast.

Open data from the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites plays a key role in monitoring the consequences of tropical storms around the world. This information not only supports researchers' understanding of extreme weather phenomena, but also equips authorities and communities with insights to better prepare for and mitigate their impacts.
