At the beginning of the third decade of August 2023, Greece faced a substantial outbreak of extensive wildfires, bringing significant concerns to the affected regions. In East Macedonia, the flames have consumed more than 8,500 hectares. At the same time, on the island of Evia, a fire has led to the evacuation of three villages to ensure the safety of residents.

Tragically, in Boeotia, captured in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image acquired on 21 August, the wildfires have resulted in a casualty in Prodromos.

The EU Civil Protection Mechanism has been activated. Two aircraft from Cyprus, 12 vehicles and over 50 firefighters from Romania are assisting in Greece's emergency response efforts.
