The Gargano Peninsula extends into the Adriatic Sea in southern Italy, forming a distinctive coastal landscape shaped by shallow waters and sediment dynamics. Located in the Puglia region, it encompasses biologically rich coastal ecosystems and protected natural areas, including parts of Gargano National Park.

Following rainfall in early April 2026, this image, acquired on 6 April 2026 by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites, shows elevated water turbidity along the coastline of the Gargano region. Sediment-laden runoff from inland areas reached the coast, producing visible plumes extending into the Adriatic Sea.

Copernicus Sentinel-2 data support routine monitoring of coastal turbidity events, enabling timely assessment of water quality, ecosystem health, and effects on fisheries and tourism.
