Widespread snow cover across Southern Patagonia

Recent winter weather brought snowfall to parts of Patagonia, the vast region spanning the south of Argentina and Chile. In Argentina’s Santa Cruz Province, snowfall and negative temperatures were reported across several areas during the second half of August, and snow alerts were also issued for the Lago Argentino region, including the towns of El Chaltén and El Calafate.

This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 29 August 2026, shows extensive snow cover across southern Patagonia. Snow is visible across the mountainous terrain surrounding the Viedma, Argentino, and O’Higgins/San Martín lakes, contrasting with darker areas of exposed terrain. The image also covers part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, with seasonal snow visible across the surrounding landscape.

Copernicus satellite data provide detailed information on the extent and distribution of snow cover, supporting the monitoring of seasonal changes across mountainous and remote regions.
