Coastal waters of the Gulf of St Vincent, Australia

The Gulf of St Vincent lies off the coast of South Australia, separating the Yorke Peninsula from the Adelaide metropolitan area. Its sheltered marine waters support coastal ecosystems, including seagrass meadows which provide habitat and nursery grounds for fish and other marine life.

In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, acquired on 31 August 2026, lighter blue and turquoise patterns are visible across the deep blue waters of the Gulf, particularly in the northern and central parts. These patterns indicate variations in the optical properties of the water, which may be associated with suspended sediments, phytoplankton, or different density of water masses. The surrounding agricultural landscape appears as a patchwork of green fields.

Copernicus Sentinel-2 data support the monitoring of changes in water colour and turbidity, providing useful information for assessing coastal water quality and marine ecosystems.
