A new heatwave is ongoing in Europe. Forecasts predict temperatures of up to 42°C in Italy, 40°C in France, and 37°C in Switzerland from August 18, 2023, until the end of the following week.

The heatwave results from a high-pressure system from Africa, bringing clear skies to a significant part of central and southern Europe. In this image acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites on 19 August, the skies over the Alps were cloudless, contributing to even higher temperatures. On the same day, the air temperature at the 'Capanna Margherita' (the highest refuge in the Alps, located at 4,556 m above sea level) reached +6.5°C.

The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) allows contextualising the weather extremes events within the broader climate change framework. More details about their activities here.
