Severe flooding in northern and central Italy
On 14 March 2025, heavy rainfall in northern and central Italy led to severe flooding and landslides in the regions of Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany. Some residents in affected areas have been evacuated, with others rescued by emergency crews. The flooding has affected road travel and led to school closures.
On the same day, Italian authorities activated the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS) to provide flood extent and damage assessment emergency mapping (EMSR795). This data visualisation based on CEMS data shows in blue the flooded areas in the region as of 17 March 2025.
Open data from the Copernicus Services and Sentinel satellites provide reliable monitoring of flooding events. This information supports response and recovery operations to keep affected communities safer.
