Irrigated fields in north-western Spain form a leaf-shaped mosaic

Santa Maria del Paramo

The Leonese Plateau is an extensive agricultural region in north-western Spain. Within this region, in the province of León between the Órbigo and Esla rivers, lies a distinctive leaf-shaped agricultural area which is visible from space. Its irrigated fields form a regular mosaic, reflecting the intensity of agricultural activity in this part of Castilla y León.

This multitemporal image combines Copernicus Sentinel-2 data acquired on 28 May, 17 June, and 6 July 2026 to reveal seasonal changes across the agricultural landscape around the towns of Santa María del Páramo and La Bañeza. The variety of colours reveals differences in crop growth, while the surrounding Órbigo and Esla river corridors appear in white.

Copernicus Sentinel-2 provides frequent, high-resolution optical imagery which supports agricultural monitoring, land-use mapping, water management, and vegetation health assessments across Europe and beyond.
