Midsummer approaches Lake Siljan in central Sweden
Lake Siljan lies in Dalarna, a region in central Sweden which is widely regarded as the country's strongest bastion of traditional Midsummer celebrations, one of the country’s most important seasonal celebrations. In Sweden, Midsummer Day falls on 20 June this year. Long daylight hours, lakeside gatherings, and decorated village greens are all hallmarks of the season there.
This image was acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 17 June 2026, shortly before Midsummer Day. It shows Lake Siljan as a branching water body surrounded by vivid green vegetation. Lighter patches indicate cultivated land and urban areas. Lake Orsa is visible to the north, connected to Siljan near the town of Mora.
Sentinel-2 data support the monitoring of water extent, vegetation condition, and land-use patterns, informing environmental management across Sweden’s inland waters through the summer.
