Wildfires along the Portugal–Spain border
Several wildfires broke out between 27 and 29 July 2026 across northern and eastern Portugal and the neighbouring province of Zamora in western Spain. The Portuguese wildfires affected homes near the Valpaços municipality, disrupted traffic near the Pínzio municipality, including the closure of the A25 motorway, and prompted the precautionary evacuation of around 800 people from 14 localities as a consequence of the fire near the Fermoselle municipality in Spain.
These false-colour images, acquired on 29 July 2026 by the Copernicus Sentinel-2A and Sentinel-2B satellites, show three affected areas near Valpaços (image 1), Pínzio (image 2), and Fermoselle (image 3). Healthy vegetation appears red, while burn scars are visible in dark brown and black. Pale blue-grey smoke extends from active fire fronts, which appear bright orange.
Copernicus Sentinel-2 data help map burnt areas and support authorities in assessing impacts on communities, vegetation, transport networks, and other infrastructure.
