Wildfires burn near Great Bear Lake, Canada
Wildfire activity increased across Canada's Northwest Territories in early July 2026, with authorities reporting numerous active fires in the Sahtu Region, home to Great Bear Lake, one of the largest lakes in North America.
This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 7 July 2026, shows several of these fires close to Great Bear Lake. Dense smoke plumes are visible across the landscape, while darker burn scars mark previously affected areas.
Copernicus Sentinel-2 data support the monitoring of active fires, smoke dispersion, and burned areas, helping authorities assess fire extent and inform response planning in remote northern regions.
