Earth Observation | Copernicus
On the 23rd and 24th January 2025 the hackathon "Coding Copernicus" took place at the Federal Highway Research Institute in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany. Participants used their wits to find new ideas for a more sustainable and climate-friendly future.
Within 24 hours each of the six teams worked on solutions to one of the three challenges by using Copernicus Earth Observation data and the CODE-DE virtual machines.
The challenges were:
- TRANSPORT – More than just grey (hosted by the Federal Highway Research Institute)
- GREEN CITIES – Hack for urban green islands (hosted by the German Environment Agency)
Afterwards three winning teams were chosen:
- The team Treekeepers pitched an online platform which shows the health status of trees in Berlin and helps to locate which trees need to be irrigated.
- Iro Goes Geo’s idea was to locate roadside areas that are suitable for implementing solar power systems by considering sun exposure.
- The team Plant Here aimed at a website that recommends urban spaces where greenery should be planted by highlighting areas that are lacking plants.
