The European Space Agency's Living Planet Symposium, which takes place every three years, will be held in Bonn, Germany, from 23 to 27 May 2022. The symposium is organised with the support of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The symposium focuses on how Earth observation contributes to science and society, and how disruptive technologies and actors are changing the traditional Earth observation landscape, which is also creating new opportunities for public and private sector interactions.

Several FPCUP actions will also participate in the Living Planet Symposium and present their activities:

  • DLR will present their research "Enhancing Earth Observation of Migration with Insights from Social Media" (Action 2019-2-11) on how Earth observation data can be complemented with social media data produced by citizens (via Twitter) to unravel the reasons and drivers of growth in urban areas due to migration, conflict, climate change, etc. The poster will be presented in session D2.03 EO for Africa: advancements of EO Science and Applications. More information about the poster can be found here.
  • SNSA will present its project "AI for Shallow waters" (Action 2018-1-43) in a poster presentation about a novel Artificial Intelligence (AI) method based on Earth Observation data, for the identification of physical changes along the Swedish coast, especially physical constructions, such as piers and jetties in the session C1.04 AI4EO: Applications for Land and Water. More information about the poster can be found here.
  • DLR will have a presentation on Thursday, 26 May 2022 in the session "D2.12 Cultural and Natural Heritage - Part 1" at 08:30 on "Feasibility of DESIS Imaging Spectrometer for the Detection of Burned Areas: The Case Study of Arakapas Fire in Cyprus 2021", which is linked to the Action 2020-2-21 "Copernicus for Cultural Heritage Summer School Workshops"
