Presenting FPCUP applications at the Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event 2023

17 May 2023 - 19 May 2023
Earth Observation | Copernicus

From 17-19 May, 2023, the Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event (JURSE) was held in Heraklion, Greece. The focus of this conference is on remote sensing of cities, both from a technical and applied perspective. In this international setting, we presented results of our work carried out within the FPCUP project (Action 2019-2-11).

In the conference’s special session on “Urban remote sensing for the Global South”, Marta Sapena gave a presentation titled “Integrating multi-source remote sensing data for monitoring urban development in West Africa”. The work demonstrates how we can better understand settlement growth and migration processes by mapping urban growth using Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data, and combining it with other information types, in this case with information on nighttime light emissions.

Johannes Mast presented a poster titled “Linking remote sensing data and online engagement in flood events in Nigeria”. In this exploratory work about the floods which struck Nigeria in 2022, we found that online discourse and remotely-sensed information using data from the Copernicus missions about the flood’s physical impact do not necessarily paint the same picture of a crisis event.

Another poster titled “Are citizens’ perceptions on urban green spaces influenced by their immediate environment? The case of Grand Nokoue, Benin Republic” was presented by Marta Sapena, where the methods developed as part of the application tool developed within the FPCUP action 2019-2-11, i.e., the data collection, pre-processing, and modelling, were used to classify green urban areas in five cities of Benin.
