Copernicus Sentinel 2 overview
Sentinel-2 is a mission under the Copernicus program of the European Union, consisting of two satellites, Sentinel-2A and Sentinel-2B. Launched in 2015 and 2017 respectively, these satellites are designed for high-resolution imaging of Earth's land surface. With a wide 290 km field of view, Sentinel-2 captures detailed imagery of vegetation, soil, water cover, and coastal areas. The mission is a collaborative effort between the European Space Agency (ESA), Airbus Defence and Space, and various European industrial partners. Sentinel-2's instruments include 13 spectral channels with different spatial resolutions, enabling the monitoring of land cover changes and assessment of biophysical parameters. The mission plays a crucial role in land monitoring services, supporting applications such as land cover classification, change detection, atmospheric correction, and differentiation of clouds and snow.
