CMEMS IN SUPPORT OF COPERNICUS MARITIME SURVEILLANCE SERVICE

The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) is the Entrusted Entity responsible for delivering the Copernicus Maritime Surveillance (CMS) service within the framework of the Copernicus Security Service.

The service is provided free of charge to authorized users conducting operations in the maritime domain. CMS supports a broad range of activities, including fisheries control, maritime safety and security, law enforcement, customs operations, marine environmental monitoring and pollution response, as well as anti-piracy and defense-related operations.

EMSA delivers the CMS service through a dedicated web-based platform called the Integrated Maritime Service (IMS). The IMS integrates a wide range of maritime datasets from multiple sources, including ship reporting systems and ancillary meteo-oceanographic data from Copernicus Marine Service, EMODnet, and European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.

The platform incorporates parameters such as sea surface temperature, wave height, ocean currents, and sea surface height derived from CMEMS ocean models, including 10-day forecasts. Integrating these datasets enhances the usability of the interface and helps CMS users build a more comprehensive understanding of the maritime surface environment.
