PREDICTING GLOBAL AND REGIONAL TIDAL CURRENTS

NOVELTIS is a private French service company specializing in space, environment, sustainable development, and technological innovation. The company has developed a global and regional tidal current prediction system called TIPS, designed for the marine renewable energy sector and tidal turbine applications.

NOVELTIS built a regional tidal model that uses data assimilation techniques to integrate satellite and in-situ observations into the model. This approach enables the correction of ocean model outputs so they more closely match observed ocean conditions, ultimately improving forecasting accuracy.

The NOVELTIS data assimilation system uses satellite sea level data provided by the Copernicus Marine Service. In-situ sea level observations from the same service are also used to validate the model results.

According to F. Jeliazovski from NOVELTIS:

“Satellite Sea Level data from the Copernicus Marine Service are a great asset for our tidal system as this allows our tidal model to be as close as possible to real ocean conditions.”
