The recently published Forest Fires in Europe, Middle East and North Africa 2024 Report, based on data from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), indicates that although last year’s fire season was classified as a moderate wildfire year for the EU, it remained above the 17-year average.

This data visualisation shows the distribution of fires in the regions covered by the report. It shows that in 2024, a total of 8,343 fires were recorded, resulting in a combined burnt area of 334,940 hectares.

EFFIS is part of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS). CEMS provides rapid situational awareness, supports post-fire assessment, and helps target prevention and recovery efforts more effectively.
