Barranquilla, located in northern Colombia, is positioned along the western bank of the Magdalena River near its mouth at the Caribbean Sea. This strategic geographic location has made Barranquilla an important port and commercial hub, earning it the nickname ‘the Golden Gate of Colombia’ for its role in facilitating trade between the interior of the country and international markets. The city’s location provides access to diverse coastal ecosystems and nearby beaches, adding to its regional significance. Every year, the famous Carnival de Barranquilla takes place, during which music and dance from various cultures are celebrated.

This Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, acquired on 31 March 2024, shows Barranquilla from above.

The Copernicus Sentinel satellites are key to the reliable and consistent monitoring of coastal zones around the world, allowing authorities and researchers to track the impacts of climate change on affected ecosystems and communities.
