Centuries-old oases in Morocco struggling with drought
Location: Morocco

Morocco is currently facing a severe drought, and the Tinghir region, shown in these images acquired by Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites in January 2017 (left) and January 2023 (right), is particularly affected.

These images show the severe impact of the lack of rainfall on the centuries-old oases of the region. They are losing their lush vegetation, and the once verdant palm groves are now barren and dry. This is causing issues for the nomadic community who rely on the oases for grazing land for their sheep and goats.

Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites provides valuable data for monitoring drought and assessing its impact on the environment and agriculture.
