The Delta del Estero Real is located along the country's Pacific coastline and spans across Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador. This expansive delta, formed by the convergence of the Estero Real and the Pacific Ocean, is a biodiverse haven where lush mangrove forests of several species thrive. Part of the site was declared a Reserve for Genetic Resources by the Ramsar Convention in 1996. This intricate network of water channels and estuaries provides a vital habitat for a rich array of flora and fauna, including various species of birds, fish, reptiles, and crustaceans.

The Nicaraguan part of the estuary is shown on this image of 16 January 2024 acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites.

The use of data from the Copernicus Sentinel satellites, combined with in situ data, is proving to be instrumental in monitoring protected areas and preserving their biodiversity.
