On 13 February 2025, a powerful storm struck central Italy, and in particular the island of Elba and inland Tuscany, bringing heavy rainfall, flooding, and landslides. In the province of Grosseto, between the towns of Orbetello and Albinia, many homes were isolated as floodwaters rendered roads impassable. Emergency rescue crews were dispatched to support residents trapped in their residences and to help clear debris.

The storm and consequent flooding led to large amounts of sediment being poured into the Mediterranean Sea from rivers in the region. This is visible in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image of the coast of Tuscany and Lazio, acquired on 16 February 2025.

Copernicus delivers open data which is essential for monitoring floods around the world. It provides valuable insights during flooding events and for evaluating the consequences on nearby communities and ecosystems.
