Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, is situated on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Demerara River. The city is the political and cultural heart of the country and home to one of the tallest wooden churches in the world. It further serves as the main commercial and manufacturing centre of Guyana, with exports including sugar, rice, tropical fruits, and more. However, Georgetown faces challenges such as frequent flooding due to its low-lying coastal location.

This Copernicus Sentinel-2 image from 9 January 2025 shows Georgetown from above.

The Copernicus Sentinel satellites are essential to the reliable and consistent monitoring of coastal zones around the world, providing evidence-based insights into coastal dynamics and urban development strategies.
