The impact of the wildfires in the Valparaíso region, Chile
Chile has been ravaged by forest fires, particularly in the Valparaíso region, where nearly 8,700 hectares have been devastated by the 5-day blaze. More than 6,000 people have been displaced in the region and at least 131 casualties have been reported. The authorities have declared the wildfires contained, but firefighters are still working to bring them under full control.
This image acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 7 February shows the burn scars in the Valparaíso area.
The Copernicus Emergency Management Service Rapid Mapping component has been activated for this event (EMSR715), and the monitoring using Copernicus Contributing Missions satellites helped delineate the burnt areas and assess the impact of the wildfire on the landscape.
