Metelių Regional Park, Lithuania
The Metelių Regional Park, located in southern Lithuania, is a protected Natura 2000 site renowned for its great lakes: Dusia, Metelys, and Obelija. They support rich aquatic biodiversity and are important stopover sites for migratory birds, including cranes and grebes. Reedbeds and wet meadows surrounding the lakes serve as breeding grounds for rare species.
This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 20 May 2025, shows the great lakes and the surrounding Metelių Regional Park.
Free and open Copernicus data is key to monitoring water quality, vegetation changes, and the impact of human activities on essential ecosystems around the world, supporting conservation efforts in biodiverse landscapes.
