Project for the restoration of mangroves in Fiji
The ecosystems and communities of the Pacific Islands are vulnerable to the consequences of climate change. For example, the area is increasingly affected by extreme weather events, such as cyclones, which are becoming more frequent and intense.
This image, acquired on 24 December 2023 by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites, shows the Rewa Delta which is located on the island of Viti Levu in the Fiji Archipelago, where a project focused on the community-based restoration of cyclone-affected mangrove forests has recently been launched.
The initiative will be carried out in six coastal communities in the Rewa Delta. Women's groups will take the lead in activities such as cultivating quality seedlings of indigenous mangroves and distributing fuel-saving cook stoves to reduce reliance on mangrove resources, aiming to empower women economically and to integrate a gendered approach into climate change and disaster risk reduction strategies.
Copernicus Sentinel satellite missions are useful assets for mapping and monitoring the extent and health of mangrove forests globally.
