A severe drought is affecting Portugal
According to the latest climatological bulletin of the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), in March 2023, 48% of Portugal was in drought conditions. The worst affected areas are in the south of the country.
This image, acquired by a Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite on 24 April, shows Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region and one of those most affected by the drought.
The Copernicus product portfolio includes two Drought Observatories, managed by the Copernicus Emergency Management Service, which provide drought indicators and early warning for droughts in Europe (EDO) and worldwide (GDO).
