The air quality in India deteriorated at the end of October because of the thick clouds of smoke from the stubble fires that are ongoing in the northwestern States of the country.

The New Delhi area is among the worst affected. In the last week of October, the air quality remained 'very poor' for five consecutive days. The Indian Meteorological Department has warned that the situation could worsen in the coming days.

This Copernicus Sentinel-3 image, acquired on 31 October, clearly shows the smoke cloud over India’s capital city.

Copernicus supports authorities in assessing and monitoring the impact of fires on air quality through its open data.
