Since the start of September 2024, hundreds of firefighters have been battling two large wildfires in San Gabriel Canyon, spanning both Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties in California, USA. The "Bridge Fire" has burned over 22,100 hectares and injured four people. Authorities have ordered evacuations for some residents, as the blaze has destroyed 73 structures and damaged 16 others.

Another wildfire, the "Line Fire," has scorched more than 15,800 hectares, destroying one structure and damaging four more.

This Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, acquired on 14 September 2024, shows the fires' reach. To the west, one can see the burn scar and smoke from the Bridge Fire, while the burn scar of the Line Fire is visible to the east.

The open data provided by the Copernicus Sentinel satellites is key to monitoring and mapping the extent and effects of wildfires around the world, informing damage assessments and supporting emergency management efforts.
