August 2026 has been the warmest August on record globally
The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) published its latest monthly Climate Bulletin, which focuses on key climate trends for August 2026.
The C3S bulletin reports that August 2026 has been the warmest August on record globally, with a global-average surface air temperature of 16.96°C, 0.85°C above the 1991–2020 average for the month. In Europe, the average temperature over land in August 2026 was 20.26°C, 1.10°C above the same baseline, making it the fourth-warmest August on record.
This data visualisation, produced using C3S data, shows surface air temperature anomalies for August 2026 across Europe, Africa, and parts of the Arctic and Asia. Warmer-than-average conditions have been reported across large parts of western and southern Europe, in excess of 3°C in France and Italy, while cooler-than-average conditions prevailed across parts of northern and eastern Europe.
