The Campania region of Italy

Campania region

The Campania region of southern Italy is famous for its memorable coastline and ancient ruins. Naples, the regional capital, is nestled between the Mount Vesuvius volcano and the Bay of Naples. Along the southern coast of the nearby Sorrentine Peninsula is the 50-kilometre-long Amalfi Coast, a popular holiday destination with steep cliffs and small beaches.

This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-1 radar satellites, shows the region from above. Mount Vesuvius stands out in the centre of the image, and to the west, the islands of Capri, Ischia, and Procida. To the south, the Sorrentine Peninsula, with its craggy topography, can be seen. In this image, impervious surfaces, in which the soil is sealed by hard materials such as concrete which prevent water from soaking into the ground, are shown in bright green.

The Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites deliver valuable all-weather radar data for land use and change assessments, ground motion detection, and coastline erosion monitoring, all of which provide essential insights for disaster risk reduction and environmental protection.
