Cays off the Isle of Youth, Cuba
Cuba is home to some of the most pristine coral reefs in the Caribbean. These vibrant ecosystems support diverse marine life, including 200 species of fish, including sharks, and sea turtles. Cuba’s coral reefs are relatively well-preserved due to limited coastal development and to conservation efforts. However, they face threats from climate change, rising sea temperatures, and ocean acidification, which can cause coral bleaching and damage these important underwater habitats.
This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites, shows some of Cuba’s cay islands, off the coast of the Isle of Youth, which are surrounded by remarkable coral reefs, sand, and seagrass.
Data from Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites support the mapping of coral reefs habitats, water quality and contribute to coral reef health assessment and monitoring around the globe.
