Persistent and severe wildfires across Indonesia
Seasonal fires are affecting forests and carbon-rich peatlands across Indonesia, with significant impacts on public health. Between July and August, Indonesia’s Health Ministry recorded more than 50,000 associated respiratory infections, including over 12,000 among children under five.
This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 2 September 2026, shows multiple fires around Ketapang in West Kalimantan. Active fires appear as orange-red areas, while dense grey-white smoke plumes extend westwards towards the coast and across the surrounding landscape.
