Portugal wildfires send smoke over the Atlantic Ocean
On 2 July 2026, several wildfires spread across north-west Portugal. Authorities deployed more than 1,100 firefighters in Vouzela, a municipality in the Viseu district, while other fires were reported in Barcelos, Cinfães, and Castelo de Paiva.
This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites on 3 July 2026 at 10:38 UTC, shows a smoke plume drifting westwards over the Atlantic Ocean from one of these fires, burning near the city of Vouzela. At the time of acquisition, the plume extended for approximately 620 km.
Copernicus satellite imagery supports wildfire monitoring by providing information on active fire locations and environmental conditions, helping authorities assess the situation and coordinate response activities.
