Portugal wildfires send smoke over the Atlantic Ocean

Sea surface temperatures (SST) across the global ocean are currently well above the long-term average. According to recent analysis from both the Copernicus Climate Change and the Copernicus Marine Services, sea surface temperature anomalies have reached record-high levels for this time of year.

On 30 June 2026, a wildfire began burning in the Sierra de Alcubierre, located in the Aragón region of north-eastern Spain. The day after, the fire spread across forested hillsides and protected areas of natural and historical value, including parts of the Ruta Orwell.

The Copernicus Emergency Management Service Global Drought Observatory recently published an Analytical Report on the situation in Madagascar. It shows drought conditions have been affecting the country in the first half of 2026, especially the southern and western regions of the island.

On 24 June 2026, two earthquakes measuring magnitude 7.2 and Magnitude 7.5 struck northern Venezuela, causing significant damage across the country. According to the latest bulletins from local authorities, the earthquakes resulted in 1,943 casualties and 10,571 injuries.
