Producing clean energy at the Gemini wind farm, Netherlands
Located in the North Sea, the Gemini offshore wind farm generates renewable electricity for the Netherlands, off the coast of Groningen.
In this image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites, the individual turbines are visible as white dots, while the turbine blades can be seen as dark shadows. The tower foundations, immersed in the waters of the North Sea, cause turbulence, churning up sediments which cause characteristic flow patterns in the water. At the bottom left of the image, a white streak from a boat’s wake is visible; in the centre of the image, between the turbines, another boat and its shadow can be seen.
Offshore wind power delivers significant environmental benefits by producing clean, renewable energy, which helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. The Copernicus Climate Change Service supports the European energy sector by providing input (wind, solar and hydro) and energy forecasts (capacity factors, demand, volatility) at the regional and national scale in Europe.
