Severe drought across southern Britain
Over the summer of 2026, dry conditions have been affecting the United Kingdom. According to the European Drought Observatory (EDO), 25% of the territory of England was in Alert conditions and 65% in Warning at the end of July 2026.
This collage compares Copernicus Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 imagery acquired over southern Britain in August 2025 and 2026. The Sentinel-2 comparison shows extensive grass browning across Hyde Park in central London on 13 August 2026. At a broader scale, the Sentinel-3 imagery shows widespread brown areas across southern Britain on the same date.
EDO, which is part of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS), provides regularly updated information for monitoring drought conditions across Europe, supporting early warning, impact assessment, and water management.
