World Maritime Day 2026: Shipping activity off the Port of Piraeus, Greece
Every year, on 24 September, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) marks World Maritime Day, which celebrates the global maritime sector. The 2026-2027 theme, “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence”, highlights the implementation of international standards across maritime operations. The Saronic Gulf, south-west of Athens, is a key maritime area in Greece. It is home to the Port of Piraeus, the country’s largest port and an important hub for passenger transport, cruise activity, and international trade.
This multitemporal image combines data acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites on 17 August, 29 August, and 10 September 2026. The coloured points are vessels in the waters off Piraeus and off the port of Elefsina, further north-west.
Copernicus Sentinel-1 radar data support reliable monitoring of maritime environments, vessel activity, and coastal change, even under cloudy conditions.
