The Galápagos Islands of Ecuador, known for their unique and robust biodiversity, face increasing threats from climate change. Rising ocean temperatures have impacted local wildlife, making it more difficult for species such as marine iguanas and sea turtles to find food and nest. While temperatures in the Galápagos naturally fluctuate with the seasons and climate phenomena such as El Niño and La Niña, the impacts of human-induced warming are becoming more pronounced.

This Copernicus Sentinel-2 image acquired on 12 March 2023 shows the southern coast of Isabela Island, including the port village of Puerto Villamil. To the southeast, Tortuga Island, a nesting location for a variety of seabirds, is visible.

Copernicus Sentinel satellite data is key to monitoring the effects of climate change on global ecosystems. This combination of data provides essential insights for conservation efforts.
