Malta, an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea, is the European Union's smallest Member State in terms of surface area and number of inhabitants.

Founded in 1962, BirdLife Malta is the island’s oldest environmental organisation, dedicated to the conservation of wild birds and their habitats. The organisation manages four nature reserves which play a key role in protecting Malta’s birdlife, providing safe havens for both migratory and resident species. In addition to operating a rehabilitation centre for injured birds, BirdLife Malta closely monitors seasonal migration patterns to better ensure their ongoing protection and well-being.

BirdLife Malta’s four nature reserves, Salina, Simar, Għadira, and Foresta 2000, are visible in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image acquired on 16 January 2025.

The Copernicus Sentinel satellites deliver essential data on the state of important ecosystems around the world, providing key insights to better protect the unique species which call them home.
