Visible impact of drought in Cyprus
Location: Cyprus
Credit: European Union, Copernicus Sentinel-2 imagery

The Eastern Mediterranean basin is currently affected by prolonged drought, as reported by the European Drought Observatory of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS).

These Copernicus Sentinel-2 images illustrate the decline in water levels at the Asprokremmos Reservoir, an important freshwater source for agriculture and local communities near Nikokleia in southwestern Cyprus. Acquired on 6 June 2024 and 3 June 2025, the images show a significant reduction in surface water extent, with the surrounding fields appearing noticeably more arid.

Copernicus is essential for monitoring drought dynamics and supporting decision-making on water resource planning. This helps authorities address climate-related pressures and safeguard food security in drought-affected regions.
