As of 29 July 2025, Portugal is impacted by major wildfires in the north and centre of the country, with more than 2,000 firefighters mobilised to battle the flames. The most affected areas are Arouca (Aveiro District), Ponte da Barca (Viana do Castelo District), and Penamacor (Castelo Branco District). The village of Fornos de Carvão, in the Arouca municipality, was evacuated overnight.

This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites on 29 July, shows the large smoke cloud generated by the wildfires in the Arouca area, along with a second plume of smoke rising from the Ponte de Barca wildfires.

Copernicus satellite data provides important information for fire prevention and preparedness, supporting the development of early warning systems, fire risk and damage assessments.
