Wildfire smoke spreads across Southeast Asia

Severe fires are affecting parts of Indonesia as a consequence of prolonged dry conditions. Smoke has spread across surrounding areas of Southeast Asia, including neighbouring Malaysia, where deteriorating air quality prompted school closures. 

This visualisation, based on Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) data and generated with the newly released Fire Emissions Watch App, shows the smoke plumes across Indonesia, Malaysia, and surrounding areas on 25 August 2026. Darker purple areas indicate where larger amounts of smoke were present in the atmosphere. 

CAMS provides near-real-time monitoring and forecasting of air quality and atmospheric composition, including smoke transport from fires. These data support public health advisories, decisions on school and workplace closures, and the assessment of population exposure to fine particulate matter.
